Roku launches two new Streaming Sticks for pre-order starting at $29

Roku ended 2024 with a new streaming box that updated the TV OS with new features. It only makes sense for Roku to also announce a new set of streaming sticks for those who want a little more portability and minimalism to play with without much sacrifice.

Roku’s Streaming Stick hasn’t had an upgrade since 2021, and there are a plethora of newer and faster options on the market. The idea behind the Streaming Stick is portability, and it being the size of what is essentially an oversized USB thumb drive, it’s extremely portable.

Roku just announced that two new models will be available for users. The Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus will offer much the same experience with enhanced hardware, which lends itself to a more comfortable watching experience. The main difference between the two will be image quality, with the Streaming Stick offering HD while the Plus model brings 4K viewing and HDR compatibility. Roku isn’t clear on the internals of the new streaming sticks.

At a glance, the new Roku Streaming Sticks don’t appear to be much smaller than the previous model, but the company still claims that the footprint is much smaller than most other TV streaming hardware. It connects via HDMI and sort of sticks out of your TV. A USB Type-C cable connects through the back of the stick for power, leaving a single cable sticking out.

TV streaming has moved away from small hardware in recent years, with Google evolving from the small Chromecast dongle to a much bigger TV Streamer box. Still, it’s good to see a company upgrade an existing form factor, especially at a price point like $29 and $39.

Both the Roku Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus are available for pre-order now.
