Following the editor updates in August, the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides homepages are now getting a Material 3 Expressive redesign.
Update 12/15: Back in November, the redesign was rolled back after a week or so. Over the past few days, we’ve seen Material 3 Expressive become widely available in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, which curiously lagged behind the other two apps. There are no obvious changes today.
This is happening on version 1.25.491.x with a server-side update (Force stop if you don’t have it yet).
Original 11/12: It starts with a new search app bar where the hamburger button and account switcher are placed outside the search field, which is now slightly taller. “Search Docs” is centered, while the “Open from” folder icon for “Google Drive” and “Device storage” is placed in a circle at the right. The navigation drawer remains the same.
Old vs. new

There is a large FAB (floating action button) in the bottom-right corner that is the only component using Dynamic Color in this redesign. Previously, the background was fully themed.
Tapping reveals the new FAB menu design with a bouncy animation for “Choose template” and “New document,” which are now placed in large pill-shaped buttons.
Overall, there are many similarities with the Google Drive redesign, and other Workspace apps.
This Material 3 Expressive homepage redesign is rolling out with version 1.25.431+ of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides for Android.
