Spotify brings AI-powered ‘Prompted Playlists’ to US and Canada – how to use it [Gallery]

Following a limited rollout last year, Spotify is bringing its AI-powered “Prompted Playlists” to listeners in the US and Canada.

The idea behind Prompted Playlists, Spotify says, is to give you some control over the music discovery process. This works by letting you explain your ideal playlist to Spotify, with AI being used to parse that prompt and create a custom playlist that you can tune to what you’re looking for.

Spotify says:

We believe that technology is only as good as the humans behind it. That’s why we created Prompted Playlist, which lets you describe exactly what you want to listen to using your own words, then generates a playlist informed by your listening history and what’s happening in music right now. It’s a new way to put meaningful control of the algorithm directly in your hands, with your ideas, your logic, and your creativity. Think of it more as collaboration, not automation: You set the rules, and Spotify works from there.

As of today, Spotify is rolling out Prompted Playlists to Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada, though it remains in beta for the time being.

Spotify also explains that you’ll be able to refresh these playlists at any time, even automating daily or weekly refreshes to keep things feeling new. The app will also show “example prompts” on the home page as created by “Spotify’s music editors and culture experts.”

As far as accessing the feature goes, it’s available through the “Create” menu in Spotify.

  1. Open Spotify and tap Create, then select Prompted Playlist.
  2. Describe what you want to hear, whether it’s a specific vibe, scenario, or cultural moment.
  3. Spotify will generate a playlist from your idea. From there, you can also set it to refresh daily or weekly.

Prompted Playlists in Spotify can also be shared with other users once they’ve been created.
