Gemini app rolling out ‘Past Chats’ personalization to free users

Google is now beginning to roll out the “Past Chats” feature to free users of the Gemini app around the world.

With Past Chats enabled, Gemini will reference your previous conversations to personalize future responses. This results in Gemini learning about your preferences for more personalized answers. When chatting, you don’t have to explicitly recall the previous conversation.

For example, if you were previously exploring a topic, you don’t have to explicitly reiterate how far you got when starting a new chat about the subject. You can ask Gemini “Did you use any info from past chats” in follow-up prompts.

Gemini first introduced this feature for Google AI subscribers last year. It’s now beginning to roll out for all free users around the world, except Europe. That is coming at a later time.

In Gemini settings, you’ll see a new “Personal context” page to enable/disable “Your past chats with Gemini.” “Instructions for Gemini” will appear below that toggle.

Looking ahead, Google will eventually bring Personal Intelligence that taps into Gmail, Photos, and other first-party apps to free users.
