YouTube test lets AI create a new video using someone else’s Shorts

The ability to build on short-form videos is a key part of the experience for many, but YouTube Shorts is now testing out a version of that which uses AI, with two abilities in the works.

In its latest test with a “small group of creators,” YouTube is giving users the ability to use AI to “reimagine” videos. Specifically, this new feature will let YouTube users “transform a single frame” from someone’s Short and turn that “into an entirely new video” using custom or suggested prompts.

The other option, also powered by AI, would allow users to “insert items into a scene” from a Short using prompts.

YouTube explains:

We’re starting to test new capabilities in the Shorts Remix menu to help creators bring their ideas to life. After tapping Remix on an eligible Short, a small group of creators (English only) will either see “Add an object” or “Reimagine” options.

  • Add object: Insert items into a scene (up to 8s) from the original Short using suggested or custom prompts.
  • Reimagine: Transform a single frame from the original Short into an entirely new video via suggested or custom prompts, with the option to upload up to two reference photos.

It’s further noted that every Short made with these AI tools will still link back to the original Short, and creators can opt-out of having their Shorts eligible for these recreations, but that will also prevent traditional remixes as well.
