It’s been a rough couple of years for Sonos, but after nearly two years of attempts to make up for an awful app relaunch and with a fresh CEO at the helm, the company is ready to return to its bread and butter.
Sonos is bringing two new speakers to market: the $300 Play and the $189 Era 100 SL. The former is more exciting, especially if you’re looking for a portable system that works with your existing Sonos setup and outside of the home. Sonos Play combines Wi-Fi connectivity for working across your entire house or for use in a stereo setup, but also includes 24 hours of playback on a single charge when paired over Bluetooth for a real portable experience.

Although the Play appears to have everything you’d want in a modern Bluetooth speaker — IP67 certification, a removeable loop for easy carrying — the real win is its ecosystem support. Sonos says its users can finally group multiple speakers over Bluetooth as well, with up to three additional Play or Move 2 units supported. That’s something fans have asked for for ages, and really does a great job finally marrying the company’s home and portable offerings into one fully-realized package.
Inside the Play, you’ll find three Class-H digital amps, two angles tweeters, and one midwoofer, alongside a far-field microphone for voice commands. Sonos is using physical buttons along the top of the device for easy controls. For those looking to keep the Play primarily docked at home, a wireless charging base is included in the box — something that’s also handy for anyone looking to take it on the go, considering this speaker also acts as a charger for your smartphone.

Speaking of keeping your speakers at home, Sonos is also launching the $189 Era 100 SL. As its name implies, it’s a cheaper variant of the already-existing Era 100 that drops its built-in microphone to save some cash at checkout. Sonos says it’s designed to be a more accessible way to buy into its ecosystem. Both devices are up for pre-order now ahead of a March 31st release date.
