Boox is updating its ultralight Android e-reader with an illuminated display

Boox is releasing two versions of its new 10.3-inch Android 15-powered e-paper tablet, catering to those who want something on the lighter side.

The new tablet might come with a version of Android that’s technically old, but that means very little given how the company’s e-paper tablets operate. Boox has a track record of releasing solid devices that go all in on drawing and reading with some of the best e-ink displays available.

The Boox Go 10.3 is coming out again, but with the “Gen II” moniker. That upgrade means a couple of things; namely, a better processor and an upgrade to Android 15 from Android 12. The new tablets also support Boox’s new InkSense Plus stylus, and bring an “advanced octa-core processor,” which looks to be a Snapdragon 690. They also come in a slightly lighter package, reduced to 364g for the more expensive option.

The reasoning behind a secondary model is what Boox says was a point of contention on the first generation. Without an illuminated display, the Boox Go 10.3 was difficult to see in low-light situations, just like any classic e-reader. In the Gen II series, there is a classic model and a “Lumi” version.

The Lumi edition brings a dual-tone front light to help with writing and reading in dimly lit environments. It’s the same approach that makes some of the company’s other e-ink tablets fun to use in all situations. In this version, though, that front light option is now available in an extremely thin (4.8mm) and light package. The light-free version is even thinner at 4.6mm.

The tablets will be powered by a 3,700mAh battery, which Boox implies will be a “full-day” experience. Time will tell how well the tablet actually does, considering the models with double the size can get weeks of use on a single charge.

Even if it’s a couple of days, an ultra-portable Android-powered e-reader is promising. That’s only made better by the benefit of having access to the Google Play Store on an e-reader.

The Boox Go 10.3 Gen II is available in both models on Amazon and the Boox store now, starting at $399.
