Amazon brings 4K and 2K video to its new battery-powered Ring Doorbell – when will Nest?

Amazon this week announced a new collection of Ring Doorbell models that include upgrade 4K and 2K video on battery-powered hardware, something Google has yet to do in its Nest lineup.

The Nest Video Doorbell (battery) we have today launched almost five years ago at this point, and is missing the 2K video update that the wired version, which we really liked, picked up last year. Needless to say, updates on Google’s side are overdue, but the timing is unknown. Nest’s biggest competition, Amazon, is applying some pressure, though.

Amazon this week announced its latest Ring Doorbell models, with the entire battery-powered lineup getting a refresh with some big updates.

The biggest addition is support for 4K video from the Ring Battery Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen). The $250 doorbell supports up to 10x zoom and “greater clarity” both in daylight and low-light conditions. It features 140-degree POV both horizontally and vertically, while also supporting color night vision.

Elsewhere in the lineup the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) has 2K video and a quick release battery pack, while the Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) has 2K video in a “streamlined” design without the quick release pack. There’s also a new 2K wired doorbell too.

Pricing lands as follows:

Ring is also offering some first-party accessories such as solar chargers – one built into the mount and another you can position elsewhere – while Ring AI Pro brings additional functionality including 180 days of video history for a monthly subscription price ($19.99/month).

The new lineup starts shipping in mid-late April.
