Android XR brings app pinning, resume, & auto-spatialization to Galaxy XR

Google is rolling out a new Android XR update that brings quality-of-life improvements to the Galaxy XR and new apps.

Android XR now lets you pin apps directly to walls where they “will stay securely anchored exactly where you placed them.”

During your session, keep a calendar app pinned next to your office desk, or anchor your favorite streaming app to the space you always wished you had a big screen TV.

Similarly, your headset will automatically restore the previous session, including apps and their layouts.

When in the home space, you will see your hands (via the passthrough cameras) when interacting with virtual content. This is meant to keep you “visually grounded in your physical space,” with “every reach, pinch and swipe feel[ing] even more natural.” This can be enabled from the Settings app > Advanced > Labs.

Another Labs feature is auto-spatialization to “turn almost any app, game, website, image or video into a 3D experience.” For example, this can add depth to YouTube videos, 2D games, and pages in Chrome.

Headsets have beautiful immersive displays, but making the most of them has been held back with so many apps still living in a 2D world.

Speaking of apps, Google now says there are “over 100 apps made to take full advantage of XR’s immersiveness.” This has doubled since the Galaxy XR launch.

  • “Try out new additions like Real VR Fishing and Trombone Champ: Unflattened! to step up the fun.”
  • “And some apps are adding new experiences, like the Paris St. Germain (PSG) Immersion app that now lets you catch live games as if you were there at Parc des Princes stadium in Paris. Watch the games in full immersive mode, or experience an overhead view of the action on your tabletop.”

Samsung is rolling out an Android XR update to the Galaxy XR starting today with these new features, as well as “new hand tracking, eye tracking, and accessibility improvements.”
