Gemini readies agent to drive your Mac and ‘organize your files’

Google is preparing to let Gemini-powered agents control your computer and “organize your files,” in a move to rival Claude Cowork.

At present, the Gemini app for macOS consists of two key features: a native chat interface reminiscent of the web app and an alt-space shortcut to open Gemini from anywhere. The latter has the advantage of allowing you to share your current window with Gemini, offering the AI visual context of your current task.

Upon a closer inspection by our APK Insight team, it seems Google has plans to expand Gemini’s presence on Mac through new agent-driven computer use. Those who have tried Claude Cowork in recent months are likely familiar with that tool’s ability to take direct control of your computer to accomplish specific tasks.

Let’s get work done together

What are you working on?

We get a fairly clear picture of Google’s ambitions for the project through four example prompts to give to your Gemini agent:

Convert my files to a sheet

Scan a local folder like invoices or reports, extract the data, and structure it into a Google Sheet.

Organize my folders

Find unorganized files in my Desktop or Downloads folder, group them by type or context, and archive the clutter.

Standardize my files

Read file metadata and batch-rename hundreds of chaotic files into clean, readable subfolders.

Close the loop on my last meeting

Grab the latest Meet transcript or notes Doc from my last meeting, and draft a follow-up email with highlights and action items.

The first three prompts heavily emphasize the ability to use Gemini to organize files from your Mac and incorporate them into Google Workspace apps. Each of these are table stakes for productivity in a post-Claude Cowork world. Under the hood, they’ll use Screen Access and Accessibility features to let Gemini see your screen and control your mouse/keyboard. Meanwhile, the fourth prompt moves the focus away from your local computer and shifts to Google apps like Meet, Docs, and Gmail.

Taken as a collection, these prompts point to Google letting Gemini get more work done on your behalf. That said, it’s interesting to imagine that this Gemini agent for macOS would have a broader set of capabilities than what has been made available for Android. So far only a small subset of Android devices, like the Galaxy S26 series, can ask Gemini to automate simple in-app tasks like ordering food.

By comparison, Google seems poised to turn Gemini for macOS into a proper competitor to Claude Cowork. This work is honestly long overdue, considering Google has experimented with this kind of agentic work since last year’s Gemini 2.5 Computer Use preview. New agentic features for Gemini should also come as welcome news for those working in organizations that are committed to Google Workspace.
