Following last week’s launch, Snapseed 4.0.1 for Android is rolling out with a shortcut to quickly launch the new Camera experience.
Update 5/14: A patch update — version 4.0.1.915151253 (versus 4.0.1.914366677) — is now rolling out. Google has also shared the official changelog for Snapseed 4.0.1 on Android:
New features / capabilities
- Added Camera shortcut (long-press on the icon to trigger)
- Added Camera capture via volume buttons
Fixes
- Fixed a bunch of crashes / issues in tools (Color, Portrait, Frames, Grunge, Retrolux, etc.)
- Fixed some issues with Camera that caused the app to freeze
- Camera Pro mode should always have access to Flash and Lens selection
Meanwhile, the team explains how “certain lenses (mostly ultra-wide and zoom lenses) aren’t showing up as options on your device” in the Snapseed Camera.
Upon further investigation, it seems like certain manufacturers limit what cameras 3Ps can access. On these devices, Snapseed doesn’t have an easy way to access the other lenses without a significant investment that would fix your specific device. So, for the time being we won’t be able to support the additional lenses on these devices.
Original 5/13: Long-pressing Snapseed on your homescreen reveals a new app shortcut called “Camera.” It uses the same googly eye icon as the FAB (floating action button) in the app.
Place it on your homescreen to skip the gallery and immediately open the Snapseed Camera. On iOS, the app offers shortcuts on the lockscreen or Control Center, a homescreen widget, and Camera Control integration.
Hopefully, this release also addresses issues that some Samsung devices had with the Snapseed Camera. The Google Photos-adjacent team has been actively responding to feedback on the Snapseed subreddit.
Snapseed 4.0.1 is now widely available via the Google Play Store.
