According to a new report, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, the one otherwise known as “Wide,” will have better inner display ultra-thin glass than the device known as “Ultra.”
ZDNet Korea reports that the “Wide” Galaxy Z Fold 8 will have 30% thicker ultra-thin glass compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Specifically, the thickness of the glass on the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to be 60μm, up from 45μm on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology is what has made foldables significantly better since their first generations. Adding that layer of thin, flexible glass helps to smooth out the inner display and make it just a tiny bit more durable. But it’s also a tough balance. The thinner the glass, the less likely it is to break when folding. But the thicker the glass, the better the display panel tends to look and the more durable the panel is to drops and impacts.
Samsung has played around with that balance over the years, with even Galaxy Z Fold 6 to Fold 7 seeing a jump of 50%.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 “Wide” is now taking another step up, hitting 60μm. That’s while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 “Ultra,” the one that shares its form factor with Fold 7, will stick at 45μm, the report says. While it means the wider device could be slightly more likely to see its display crack randomly, a problem on some past devices, it’ll be stronger in day-to-day use.
Samsung is expected to launch both new foldables on July 22.
