Secure cloud storage is a game-changer while physical drives are nightmarishly expensive

Buying a new hard drive or solid-state storage solution is nearly out of the question. The cost of buying a physical drive has essentially doubled, so storing photos, files, and other important data is a little harder. An affordable alternative remains – secure cloud storage.

Cloud storage has been a clean and easy solution for some time, but changing digital ecosystems and subscription costs make it a challenge not only to stay on top of but also to afford. That’s only compounded by physical storage costs. Buying an SSD now would cost you twice as much as it did a year ago. The traditional method of storing photos you’ve collected over the years and all of your personal data on a secure physical solution is significantly less feasible.

A good alternative is a service like pCloud. Based in Switzerland, pCloud is a cloud storage platform that serves over 24 million customers worldwide. That spans between personal use cases and business professionals who need trusted, flexible storage options that have a reputation of security.

Unlike a cloud service built within an ecosystem like Apple’s or Google’s, pCloud is accessible from any operating system without a subscription. Users on macOS, Windows, and Linux using pCloud Drive are able to access files that sync across devices in real time. That’s where cloud storage gets the upper hand on physical options.

The company’s reputation in cybersecurity means pCloud’s encryption can be trusted to protect your most sensitive files. With client-side, zero-knowledge encryption, files are secured before they’re uploaded, and only you have the key to unlock them. That extends to the Crypto folder, which is the go-to spot for your sensitive data.

Another big benefit is the aspect of hands-off backup. Never lose essential data because all of it is safe from forms of data loss. It’ll always be there when you need it. That’s a massive contrast from on-device storage, which always brings the risk of data loss – some of which could be precious photos or memories.

pCloud brings some other features beyond simple data management. The app and desktop programs make it easy to share files with not only other pCloud users, but also users outside of the service. If you’re using pCloud on a phone, you also get automatic full-res photo backup to not only free up space on your device, but in your costly ecosystem-based cloud storage. If you need to edit them after backup, the app makes it easy to do that, too.

A service like pCloud has a massive advantage over physical storage and other cloud storage options in the listed ways, but also in cost.

There is no subscription, and no need to re-up with pCloud. A one-time payment is all that’s necessary, just like buying a new SSD. Except pCloud hasn’t double its prices in less than a year.

pCloud’s 4th of July promotion runs from June 29 through July 8, 2026 only. During the holiday, 9to5Google readers can get a Premium 1TB package for $199, instead of the normal $664. That’s a pretty big discount. Even better, the Premium Plus 2TB plan is over $500 off at just $299, and the even larger 10TB package is currently over half off at $890. During the 4th of July event, each plan includes access to pCloud Encryption or the Crypto Folder for free.

Secure, backed, and automatic storage at that price easily beats subscription-based services and exceedingly expensive physical storage options.
