After showing off a proof-of-concept back at CES 2026 earlier this year, TCL is officially making its first NXTPAPER phones with AMOLED displays – the TCL P80 series.
TCL’s NXTPAPER display tech is more than just a matte coating, but the one part that takes the whole thing down a notch has been the panel technology. While NXTPAPER displays typically look good, they lack the vibrance and brightness of the AMOLED (or OLED) panels used on most other modern smartphones. That’s finally changing, with the first new releases dropping this week.
TCL P80, P80 Pro, and P80 Ultra offer up a 1.5K NXTPAPER AMOLED display and some of the highest-end packages TCL has put together so far – though still not quite in flagship territory. All three phones are based on MediaTek chips, with Ultra and Pro using Dimensity 7400 Elite and the base model a Dimensity 7300 Elite. These are upper-mid-range chips that are still a whole lot more powerful than what TCL’s phones usually bring to the table. They’ve all got a 6.83-inch display.
The TCL P80 Ultra has two 50MP cameras on the back including a telephoto lens, up to 512GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, a 6,800 mAh battery, and IP68 dust/water resistance. TCL P80 Pro is virtually identical, but the second 50MP camera is now an 8MP ultrawide. The base TCL P80 also has a 50MP main camera and 8MP ultrawide, but has the aforementioned drop in chipset, as well as limiting itself to 256GB of storage at most, while still offering 8GB of RAM. It also drops down to a 6,000 mAh battery.
These phones launch in Europe starting today at €349, €429, and €549, respectively.
TCL says these phones will come to the US eventually, but there’s no exact word on when. TCL is supporting the Ultra with 7 years of OS and security updates, while the Pro and base models drop to 3 years of OS updates, but stick with 7 years of security updates.
