The internet is mad. Shocking statement, I know, but this time it’s about a perceived quality control issue on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 that sees the display corners able to bend or flex inward, but that Samsung says is part of the design.
On Reddit, Samsung’s forums, and endless social media posts – as well as a heaping pile of clickbaity headlines – a “flaw” with the Fold 8 is being criticized. Some have noticed that when you apply pressure to the corner of the inner display on Samsung’s new foldable, the corner flexes inward, leaving a small gap between the display and the bezel until the pressure is released. It seems to be more pronounced on some devices rather than others – on my personal Fold 8, it’s barely noticeable.
Reactions have varied, with one thread calling on Samsung to recall the device due to this.
Samsung says, though, that this is normal behavior.
In a statement to Business Post as well as a reply apparently through its forums, Samsung explains that the corners of the display flex to protect the display in the case that something is trapped within the folded display, as well as to “reduce the impact of interference or pressure between internal components of the display.” The statement explains:
If something like sand adheres to the top surface of the internal display, the screen could get scratched when the Fold is folded. We designed it so the display indents slightly to provide a cushioning effect and prevent damage. Since this feature was prepared to ensure consumers do not experience inconvenience, we have not provided a separate official explanation.
One of the main concerns here was in regards to water resistance, with many assuming that this gap would let water get into the internals of the device. This was tested directly by one user, who applied pressure to the display corners while the Fold 8 was entirely submerged in water, with the foldable coming out unscathed.
