An Android Auto bug is reportedly blocking outgoing calls from closed foldable phones, like the Motorola Razr. Both Google and Motorola are aware of the issue, which might mean a fix for those affected soon.
There is no shortage of form factors in the bucket of Android foldable devices. The most iconic might be the Razr from Motorola, if only for the nostalgia associated with it. Just like the original Razr flip phone in the mid-2000s, and every other foldable, the outer display has at least some use cases. Making or taking calls is a big one.
According to a couple of reports on Motorola and Google forums, the Motorola Razr can’t actually make calls while the phone is closed and connected to Android Auto because of a strange bug (via Android Authority). If an outgoing call is attempted, Android Auto throws an error that suggests opening the phone. When open, outgoing calls go through without issue.
Obviously, that negates the benefit of having a foldable device. And storing your foldable phone somewhere in your car while the internal display is exposed might be neglect, at least, in line with Samsung and Motorola’s suggested care.
The bug reports only mention calling from a Motorola Razr connected to Android Auto, ranging from the Razr Ultra 2025 and Razr Ultra 2026.
According to those users, there is a fix. The good news – reverting back to Google Assistant from Gemini solves the problem. The bad news – Google Assistant was just fully removed from Android as a whole on September 28.
Both Google and Motorola are aware of the Android Auto bug. Motorola’s thread lists a response from the company less than two weeks ago. It’s possible the bug is still affecting users, and with Gemini taking over for Google Assistant, the issue might only spread to more users and devices until a fix is widely rolled out.
