Huawei has just introduced its new Mate 90 Pro Max in China and the big feature is not the cameras built into the device, but rather the giant one you can add on.
The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max is the company’s latest flagship, packing a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display, Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9050 (or Pro) chip, Harmony OS 7.0, 12GB or 16GB of RAM, a 6,800 mAh battery, IP68/69, and a pretty solid camera setup. The main camera is a 50MP shooter with variable aperture, backed up by a 40MP ultrawide and a 200MP telephoto shooter with 4x optical zoom.
There’s also a 13MP front-facing camera with a 3D depth sensor, split into three different camera cutouts.
It’s not the phone itself that’s so attention-grabbing, though.
Huawei has a “Z10” camera module add-on that’s basically just an entire camera you can attach to the phone. It packs a 1-inch camera sensor, up to 10x optical zoom, and a huge detachable lens. Huawei explains (translated):
A multi-lens optical system, a 24mm-240mm focal length, 10x continuous optical zoom, and a maximum aperture of F2.0-F4.5, combined with a 1-inch sensor, delivers superior imaging capabilities.
The innovative HyperClick mount allows for a seamless connection to your phone with a single click, enabling instant sharing after shooting – making travel photography incredibly convenient. It naturally captures portrait interactions and realistically reproduces distant skylines, making professional imaging capabilities readily available.
Like the built-in cameras, which the module covers up, this add-on camera uses an RYYB sensor, and it’s a 50MP sensor. It can adjust between a 24mm and 240mm focal length.
The cost of the add-on “Z10” camera is 5,999 CNY, around $900 USD. The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max itself runs 9,499 CNY, around $1,400. Both are available this week in China.
