Google today announced some new Chromebooks from partners Haier and Hisense that become some of the most affordable options yet at $149.
It also gave a first look at new types of Chrome OS devices arriving soon from Asus, including a sub $100 thumb drive-like Chrome OS computer called Chromebit and the first fully convertible Chromebook called Chromebook Flip.
While inexpensive, both of the new Chromebooks have 11.6-inch displays, quad-core processors, 2GB of RAM expandable to 16GB, 8-10 hours battery life and 16GB of built-in flash storage.
A new type of Chrome OS device, the Asus Chromebit (pictured above) is a small thumb drive-like dongle that Google said will provide a full Chrome computer experience for under $100.
You’ll have to add your own display and peripherals to that cost, however. “By simply plugging this device into any display, you can turn it into a computer. It’s the perfect upgrade for an existing desktop and will be really useful for schools and businesses.”
Lastly, Google gave a look at an upcoming Chromebook from Asus called Chromebook Flip: the first fully-convertible Chromebook allowing you to flip the screen behind and go from laptop to tablet mode:
The two new Chromebooks from Haier and Hisense are available to preorder starting today for $149.
The new Chromebook Flip from Asus will be available for $249 this spring and the Chromebit will be available for under $100 this summer.
Google also noted that 11.6” Chromebooks for $199 to 15” Chromebooks for $499 are arriving in the coming months from Acer, AOPEN, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and LG.
