About a year after the last update, Fossil Gen 6 watches are getting a new Wear OS patch. Fossil announced this January that it was done making Wear OS (and hybrid) smartwatches.
The last update to Fossil Gen 6 in November of 2023 brought Wear OS 3.5 with the August 2023 security patch (RFHC.231016.001). It was not a big update and came over a year after it debuted on the original Pixel Watch.
Over the past day, Fossil Gen 6 owners were prompted about an available update. After installing, RFHF.240305.011 (based on Android 11) brings devices to the April 2024 security patch. There is no available changelog on what’s been fixed or improved.
At the start of this year, Fossil did say that its Wear OS devices would be updated “for the next few years,” but today’s release is still surprising.
With Wear OS 3.5, you’ll still get app updates from Google and third-parties. There’s some utility in that regard, but you might want to update sooner than later to benefit from the latest software and hardware (chip) enhancements. Fossil devices are now two major versions behind (Wear OS 4/Android 13 and Wear OS 5/Android 14), with Wear OS 5.1/Android 15 already in developer preview.
