Google redesigning web app launcher with Material 3 Expressive

The web app launcher available in the vast majority of Google apps online is getting a redesign with Material 3 Expressive. It follows the last Material You update in 2023.

The first ‘page’ of app icons is now titled “Your favorites” and housed in a rounded container with a lighter/darker background (depending on your theme). Compared to before, you can only have nine apps here, but the launcher is now slightly taller by default.

Redesign

A pencil icon in the top-right corner lets you “Drag and drop apps” with a fairly standard jiggle animation. You could always arrange these icons, but there was previously no indication. You just had to know that editing was possible.

The outer container houses the rest of the shortcuts that you can scroll through.

We’re seeing this web app launcher redesign in both Google apps and the Chrome New Tab. (Gemini notably lacks the launcher.) However, it’s not yet widely rolled out to all Google Accounts we checked today.
