An update to Starlink’s website shows an increase in pricing, as residential services drop the option to buy hardware outright.
Starlink is increasing pricing for its residential and roam packages by $5 to $10 (via PCMag). The company’s website has recently been updated in the US to reflect the new cost per month, starting at $10 for the cheapest plan (standby).
The biggest jump hits the Starlink Residential Max and Roam Unlimited plan pricing, which increase to $130/month and $175/month, respectively. The Roam 300GB plan seems to hang steady at $80/month
| Tier | Previous price | Increased Price |
|---|---|---|
| Residential 100 Mbps | $50 | $55 |
| Residential 200 Mbps | $80 | $85 |
| Residential Max | $120 | $130 |
| Roam 100GB | $50 | $55 |
| Roam 300GB | $80 | $80 |
| Roam Unlimited | $165 | $175 |
| Standby | $5 |
Starlink attributes the raised price structure to coverage expansion. In a letter to users, the company states that even though pricing has remained unchanged for some time, a demand increase “reflects the value customers continue to see in the service.” This seems to serve as justification for a pricing structure change.
The company has seen tremendous growth as companies like United Airlines, T-Mobile, and US Mobile have chosen to adopt the satellite service for expanded coverage where it makes sense.
As spotted by Arstechnica, Starlink has apparently also removed the “buy” option for its Residential plans. Users were previously allowed to purchase Starlink satellites for the price of $499, though promotions were offered to bring that cost down to $0 given the user signs up for an increased 12-month plan.
Starlink’s website only lists a way to pay monthly, with no option to buy hardware outright and use for a standard subscription. That plan, again, starts at $100/month. The website notes this option is available in “select markets” as a flexible option for users.
The option to purchase a Starlink Mini satellite is still available, starting at $199 for the hardware followed by a $55 monthly payment price for Roam 100GB or $80/month for Roam 300GB. This option is the go-to for users looking to use Starlink hardware on the move, as opposed to at their home or fixed location.
At the time of writing, Starlink’s latest satellite model for Residential use can be purchased from retailers like Walmart for a fixed price. Once hardware is bought separately, a monthly plan can be set up, negating the need to rent hardware from the company.
