Samsung hints at silicon-carbon batteries for more Galaxy phones

One of the big updates in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is the debut of silicon-carbon batteries and, in an interview, Samsung has hinted at what might be next for the updated battery tech.

The appeal of silicon-carbon batteries is packing more energy into a smaller package. While some brands have used that to pack absolutely giantic batteries into smartphones – we’re talking foldables passing 7,000 mAh, and slab phones with 10,000 mAh – Samsung took a pretty conservative approach to this tech in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.

4,800 mAh in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and 5,000 mAh in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the latter being thinner than its predecessor. That’s a welcome bump up from the measly 4,400 mAh battery on offer previously, but there’s obviously still room for improvement. Then again, can you really blame Samsung for taking this one slow? The scars are there.

Anyway, it does sound like Samsung has plans to continue using silicon-carbon in other Galaxy smartphones.

Noted by Korean publication Kyunghyang Shinmun, Samsung explained its approach to silicon-carbon during a private briefing, reiterating some of the same points 9to5Google also noted during our launch coverage, that being Samsung’s focus on longevity, safety, and performance.

The company also teased bringing silicon-carbon to future Galaxy devices, with the decision boiling down to “if the battery can help improve the customer experience.” Which, yeah, bigger batteries do tend to be a positive.

Samsung explains (translated):

We applied silicon carbon anode materials to mobile phones for the first time to increase energy density. This played a role in improving battery performance.

Samsung’s firm principles regarding batteries are safety, stability, and long-term usability. We have strived to create batteries that maximize only their advantages, and Samsung applies technology only when it reaches a level where customers can confidently trust and use it safely.

…We will decide whether to apply them depending on the product if the battery can help improve the customer experience.

Rumor has it that the Galaxy S27 series will be adopting silicon-carbon and, if so, it’s pretty likely that this new battery tech will become somewhat of a standard for Samsung devices.
