Samsung hints it may be trying to beat Google Glass to market

An unnamed Samsung spokesperson cited by The Korea Times suggests that Samsung may be attempting to beat Google Glass to a public launch with its Galaxy Glass or Gear Glass device.

Samsung suggests that its smart glass product may be launched at the IFA in September. Nothing is known on when Google finally plans to put Glass on public sale, though it has been gradually expanding its Glass Explorer program, with existing Explorers recently invited to buy Glass for a friend after previously being given three invitations to pass on back in September of last year.

The piece says that functionality would be similar to its Galaxy Gear smartwatch – perhaps not the smartest of comparisons to draw …

Samsung’s U.S. design studio head had earlier said that 2014 would be a “really big year” for wearables. The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) said that it expects the market for wearable devices to be worth $6 billion by 2016.
