Earlier today Google and Mattel teamed up to unveil a new product that revives Mattel’s classic View-Master toy using some new Google Cardboard virtual reality tech. We were on the floor at the press event and managed to get some hands-on time with the new toy, which will first arrive with support for Android devices before arriving for other mobile devices.

Like Google’s Cardboard headset unveiled last year, the device will use an inserted smartphone as its display and offer a virtual reality experience using compatible apps. This is the first official partner to release hardware for the Cardboard platform, although there are other companies selling compatible headsets and DIY kits.

Mattel’s plans to bring the View-Master toy to iOS and mobile devices other than Android would also seem to hint that Google might have its own plans to expand the platform.

Mattel wil begin selling the new View-Master for around $30 this fall. It will work with existing Android Cardboard apps and also offer 4 View-Master reels for approximately $15 with exclusive content.
