Acer America announced Jan. 5 that it would launch the 10.1-inch budget-friendly Iconia Tab A200, equipped with Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system, in the United States for $329.99.
The titanium-gray A200 weighs 1.5 pounds, but the hefty tablet comes with a high-definition multitouch display at 1280-by-800 resolution. Nvidia’s Tegra 2 dual-core mobile processor and GeForce GPU power the device that features Acer’s Ring interface. With such a large screen, touted processing power and graphics processor, Acer is calling it an ideal gaming tablet.
“Made especially for multimedia enjoyment, the A200 packs hardware and apps for loads of fun,” said Acer in the announcing press release. “The Iconia Tab A200’s fast gaming experience is also supported by a six-axis motion sensing gyroscope, essential for high-precision gaming so actions and animations are more correctly performed.”
Acer said the tablet would get a free upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in mid-February. In the meantime, the A200 will debut with the Tegra Zone Android app preinstalled that allows users to browse and download Android games optimized for Tegra-powered tablets. It will also showcase the Netflix app for streaming content, the Kindle app for e-reading, and SocialJogger, which consolidates Facebook and Twitter into one spot.
The A200 sports an 8-hour battery life, two-megapixel front-facing web camera, and a USB 2.0 port, MicroSB slot, and micro-USB port for connecting other devices. Acer’s latest U.S. device succeeds the A500, and the Taiwan-based company said it would include the same customizable app widgets that other Honeycomb tablets offer.
“The Acer Iconia Tab family of tablets is an excellent example of Acer’s ability to deliver high-performance, full-function mobile devices at unbeatable values,” said Eric Ackerson, senior product marketing manager for Acer America, in a statement. “Acer brings the Iconia Tab A200 to consumers at an affordable price, without making sacrifices on key tablet features such as expansion, connectivity to other devices, HD displays and cameras.”
The WiFi tablet will release as a 8GB version starting at $329.99, but consumers can grab the 16GB version for $30 more at national retail stores.
Acer’s A200 tablet will probably be on display at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show next week, where MIPS Technologies, Velocity Micro, and other tablet manufacturers will highlight low-cost tablets.
