Favorite app of the day: Customize your device with Themer

When it comes to Android, one of the biggest advantages and selling points of the platform is customization, customization, customization. The opportunity to skin, theme, change, alter and design everything from widgets to icons to shortcuts is one of the great aspects of Android life. A quick walk-through of Google’s Play Store shows there is no shortage of launchers and many Android fans rattle off the names Nova, ADW and Apex like they are verbs. However, as popular as those three launchers are, they are just the tip of the iceberg and that’s where my newly minted favorite app comes into the story. Say hello to Themer.

At this point, Themer has already been covered in pretty good detail around the web even netting a New York Times story on its creation and development. Themer bills itself as something that will:

“Transform your homescreen to something that is beautiful, functional, and designed to fit the way you use your phone.”

So what makes Themer so different that it warrants all the mentions in the press lately? Well, when it comes to theming your device, Themer “does all the work for you, setting up wallpaper, widgets and icons in one click.” That’s not to say that previous methods of theming were difficult by any stretch of the imagination, but perfecting a theme took time and lots of tweaking. Themer takes care of all of that and leaves you with one single option: which theme do you want to choose? This is a fantastic app to show even the most novice of Android owners just how customizable their smartphone truly is and opens the door to showing off (and bragging about) their new homescreen to all their iOS and Windows Phone friends. Sure, there are some limitations including the lack of lockscreen optimization but Themer’s owners told the New York Times that’s coming down the road.

“But Mr. Dhingra says that coming versions of Themer will tackle the lock screen issue. Which means the app could ultimately offer a wide variety of themes and the capacity to alter those themes to any specifications. The Apple approach — like the cookie-cutter approach to home design — will then seem even duller.”

If customization isn’t your cup of tea, there’s nothing about Themer that screams “must-have” download, but if you do have even a passing interest in customization and little time to emulate some of the beautiful designs on mycolorscreen.com, Themer is exactly what the doctor ordered.
