Sony announces super slim 8-inch Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact w/ PS4 Remote Play

In addition to announcing new Xperia smartphones and its new Android-Wear powered SmartWatch wearable, Sony today announced a new 8-inch “Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact”. Sony said it’s the world’s slimmest and lightest compact tablet (compact meaning its under 7-inches) with the device coming in at 6.4mm and 270g.

Perhaps the most notable new feature for the device and other smartphones announced by the company today is a new PS4 Remote Play feature that lets the device dock into a PlayStation 4 controller and act as a remote gaming experience for the PS4 console (pictured below with Xperia smartphone):

Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is the world’s first tablet to offer PS4 Remote Play*1, enabling users to enjoy the PS4 gaming experience on its large, 8 inch screen. The TRILUMINOS™ display for mobile with Live Color LED provides a wide palette of rich natural colors for the sharpest images, and a viewing experience full of depth and reality when playing games or watching movies.

Sony also noted that the new tablet includes a “TRILUMINOS™ display for mobile with Live Color LED” and much improved audio: In terms of audio, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact delivers High-Resolution audio output directly via the headphone jack, and also features Sony’s ground-breaking DSEE HX technology which upscales the fidelity of low-res music files such as MP3 to near High-Resolution quality, ensuring that extremely high audio quality can be enjoyed anytime. Furthermore, its built-in digital noise cancelling capability reduces ambient noise by up to approximately 98%.

Other specs include a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, an 8.1-megapixel main camera, 2.2-megapixel front-facing cam, 3GB of RAM, up to 16GB memory, microSD,  and a 4,500mAh battery, The device comes with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box and is also IP65/68 certified dust-tight and waterproof.

Sony didn’t announce in its press release when the tablet will become available.
