You’ll be able to hot-swap most of Project Ara’s modules

The idea of being able to modify and upgrade your phone’s hardware as you please almost sounds too good to be true, but Project Ara aims to offer just that. But in addition to being able to pick and pull your device’s camera and battery, the director of Google’s modular smartphone program, Paul Eremenko recently revealed that you’ll be able swap even more modules around.

With the exception of the phone’s display and CPU, everything else can be substituted while the device is running, in some cases even during a phone call. Thanks to a modified version of Android L that that makes this hot-swapping business possible. Say you’re at a concert and your favorite band is giving an amazing performance, but the arena is too dark for your phone’s camera to take a decent picture. Instead of powering down and popping in a new camera, you’ll be able to immediately skip to swapping out your phone’s shooter without missing a beat.

If being able to change most of your phone’s parts without the need of a shutdown isn’t enough, Eremenko also revealed that Google is working on an online store that will sell different modules for Ara owners. Maybe they’ll just add this new section to Google Play.
