Search Engine Land has received confirmation from Google that it is widening its sources for the news callout boxes in Google search results. Previously, this section of Google search pages only included select online publications and newspapers.
With this new change, though, Google says that almost any form of online article content can now be presented in this fashion. This includes Reddit posts. Google has officially commented on the change; the statement is included below.
We will be pulling from all over the web which means that we will present as diverse a range of voices as possible to ensure we get users to the answer they are looking for.
We are always working to give our users the best possible answer to their question. That might come in the form of a video, a press release, a blog, a photo, a social media post or a news
article.
The difference is distinguished by wording of the special box in Google results. Before, the section was denoted as “News for [search query]”. With the inclusion of a lot more informal and social media, Google changed the title to “In The News”. Unfortunately, the change has also led to some expletives leaking on to Google’s main pages, as discovered by Search Engine Land:
