Google Trends is a great place to go if you want to know what the web is up to on any given day; it does a great job of showing you trending search terms—and charts that put a ranking on basically everything—from almost any country in the world. Today, the functionality of this website has expanded, with Google announcing that they’ve added a new “Trending on YouTube” section which shows some of the most popular YouTube videos of the day.
Google says that the new feature is only available to users in the United States, but a few people have reported it already working elsewhere (namely, Canada). At the moment, this feature isn’t as fleshed out as the rest of Google Trends, and the data available is limited to just 24 hours. And oddly, there doesn’t seem to be any set number of videos that will show on this page. Google says that “up to 200” will be ranked, but at the time of this writing, there are only 23.
Starting today, you can try out a new way to see hundreds of the latest trending videos on YouTube. Visit Google Trends (google.com/trends) and tap “Trending on YouTube” to discover a list of up to 200 trending videos. For now this feature is available in the US, but we plan to expand soon.
The update is live now, and a quick click on the “Trending on YouTube” heading takes you a page that basically ranks a couple dozen YouTube videos in terms of how many views they’ve gotten in the last 24 hours. This new feature has also rolled out to the mobile Trends site, giving you just one more source of entertainment for when you’re on the throne or in between class looking for a quick bit of entertainment.
It looks like that video of Taylor Swift’s “Shake if Off” played on top of an old 80’s workout track is still doing pretty well.
