OnePlus One OxygenOS full walk-through and mini review (Video)

OnePlus’ ROM OxygenOS is finally available to the public and today we’re taking a look at what it has to offer. There has been a lot of hype surrounding the release of this in-house ROM, but what makes it so special? Check out the video below for a full walk-through of OnePlus’ OxygenOS ROM…

Simply put, this is a near stock Lollipop ROM with a few customization options. There’s not much happening in version 1.0 of OxygenOS, but it’s nice to finally have a ROM that’s straight from the source. Most everything that you’ll find in OxygenOS, is also present in CM11s and CM12. OnePlus has baked in all of the regular features we’ve grown to love about the One and left mostly everything else untouched.

Some people may be disappointed by the lack of customization available in this ROM (themes, etc…), but there are a few things to consider. This is the first release and it’s likely that things will change and features will be added over time. Also, packing a ROM with a ton of features isn’t always the best route to go. It’s clear that OnePlus as a company is a very small operation and adding a ton of features could lead to delays, software bugs, and longer cycles between updates. I think that keeping OxygenOS as a basic Lollipop ROM was a smart move overall.

Installing OxygenOS is very simple. I already had a custom recovery installed on my OnePlus One (TWRP) and I just loaded up the flashable ROM and was on my way. OnePlus has also released a Feedback app that will allow you to help improve future releases of OxygenOS. The app allows you to submit detailed bug reports with screenshots and logs if needed. Along with that, there’s a feature request tab and I’m sure OnePlus is going to receive a good amount of feedback in this department.

Overall, OxygenOS is very snappy. This smartphone continues to be the best one for the money in terms of overall performance, reliability, battery life, and now software support. There’s not much else you can ask for. As far as battery life goes, we can’t really evaluate that just yet, but it’s been holding strong so far.

If you’re not into the basic Lollipop action that OxygenOS offers, there are still a good amount of third-party ROMs available for this device. I’m happy with OxygenOS for now though. It’s quick and very clean. If I’m ever in the mood for something with more bells and whistles, it’s not too complicated to flash over one of the many ROMs available for this device.
