HTC’s new colorful J Butterfly for Japan is probably preferable to the One M9

HTC has today brought to the world (or just Japan, actually) the announcement of its HTC J Butterfly flagship, likely to come to other parts of the world under the Butterfly 3 moniker. The phone is a colorful new handset with a waterproof plastic build, packs some very powerful internals, and even brings with it some features that HTC left behind for its One M9 flagship…

The Butterfly 3 packs a QHD 5.2-inch screen, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of (expandable!) internal storage, a 20.2-megapixel rear-facing camera with HTC’s Duo Camera set up, a 13-megapixel front camera, NFC, LTE-A, and an IR blaster. All of this is powered by Qualcomm’s infamous Snapdragon 810 processor—the same one that controversially had heating problems on the M9.

This all sounds great, but there are some things that distinguish this phone from HTC’s M9 flagship. The phone has a plastic build that comes in three colors—Rosso, Silk, and Indigo—and it has an oddly small battery, sitting at 2,700 mAh, which is just a bit smaller than the 2,840 mAh battery found in the M9 and M9+. Also, it’s worth noting that this phone passes on the fingerprint sensor of the M9+.

If you live in Japan, you can expect to grab the phone on at least one carrier—currently KDDI—in early June. There’s no word on an International launch of the phone yet, and there may not ever be one as far as we know. If you did live in Japan, though, I think it goes without saying that this handset is just as good of an option—if not better—than the One M9.
