Motorola has already announced which of its handsets will be receiving the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. Among them — of course — are the newest smartphones like the Moto X Pure, Moto X Play and Moto G. As is customary before software updates for Moto, the company is allowing a very select group of X Pure owners to test the new OS…

Following several suggestions that Motorola was already running a full ‘soak test’ for this year’s Moto X Pure, Motorola’s David Shuster took to Google Plus to clarify things a little:

There have been a couple reports of a Marshmallow “soak test” that has started for Moto X 2015 Pure Edition. Just want to make it clear that we have NOT started a formal “soak test”. We have started a small TestDrive for the Marshmallow upgrade on Moto X 2015 Pure Edition. We will be conducting these tests for the next couple of weeks. Pending the feedback during this test cycle will determine the timing of a full soak test.

Although we don’t know the date for release, we do know that the following phones will get Android 6.0:

  • 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)
  • 2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)
  • 2015 Moto X Play
  • 2015 Moto G (3rd gen)
  • 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)
  • 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia2 (2nd gen)
  • 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE2 (2nd gen)
  • DROID Turbo
  • 2014 Moto MAXX
  • 2014 Moto Turbo
  • Nexus 6

Of those in the list, the Nexus 6 is the only device to currently have Android 6.0 available. Some users have already received the update over-the-air, while others will have downloaded the disk images and flashed the software manually.

Since its handsets run an almost stock version of Android, it’s likely that Motorola’s phones will be among the first to get Android 6.0 over-the-air. Last year, some of the Moto range got Android Lollipop before some Nexus devices. Although that hasn’t happened this year, Motorola could be smarting over the fact that another, non-stock Android OEM has beaten them to the punch. In a move that surprised many of us, LG announced recently that it’ll start its Marshmallow rollout for the LG G4 in Poland next week.
