First devices that use Google’s Brillo and Weave launch at CES 2016

The Internet of Things is quickly shaping up to a big story at CES 2016. Numerous internet connected gadgets for the home will be announced over the next few days. Many of them are using the Brillo and Weave standards that Google announced last year. The former is basically a stripped down version of Android for IoT devices, while the latter is a language devices can use to talk to one another.

At LG’s home appliance focused keynote, Gayathri Rajan, Google’s VP of product management for Brillo and Weave, came on stage citing how IoT devices have to be open and be able to communicate with one another regardless of brand. Furthermore, the data being outputted should be comprehensible so developers can use and build on it. She also cited how Brillo has built in security features like verified boot, data encryption, and updates.

Products-wise, ASUS revealed a Brillo hub that acts as an intermediary between your smartphone and other smart devices. They mentioned an updated version of their Ai-Cam camera and smart power plug that will ship later this year. Kwikset is making a keyless smart lock that connects to your phone through Weave.

On the chip front, Marvell is making a Wi-Fi chipset that communicates using Weave. This is aimed at other gadget makers who want to add connectivity and smarts to their own devices.

That’s so far all the Brillo and Weave news at CES, but we will see many more gadgets over the coming days. Consumers should begin seeing that the home appliances they purchase over the next year will work better with their Android phones.
