Earlier this year, we checked out the Panasonic CM1. In short, it’s either an Android powered compact camera that can make phone calls, or a basic Android smartphone with an incredible camera. Either way, we were impressed by its image capture capabilities. Although it’s clearly a niche product, Panasonic has decided to follow it up with the CM10; a device that’s identical to the CM1 in all ways but one…
Panasonic’s newly announced CM10 has exactly the same list of specs as the CM1, but it can’t make phone calls. It still has a SIM slot, and can connect to LTE networks and send text messages, it just can’t make regular voice calls.
It has a full HD 4.7-inch screen on the front, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 2600mAh battery and 2GB RAM inside, as well as 16GB internal storage with the option to expand via MicroSD card. It runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box and measures an impressive 21mm thick at its thickest point.
The camera on the back is easily the device’s biggest selling point. It has an impressive 1.0-inch 20.1MP sensor capable of recording 4K video, and a f/2.8 Leica lens. It has both auto and manual focus, as well as optical and digital zoom and some really useful manual software controls and a versatile physical ring around the lens.
At ¥100,000 (roughly $850), we can’t help but feel there are better options out there for those who want a connected camera. Still, there’s clearly a market for the device, regardless of how small. Panasonic will only produce 500 per month to meet that niche demand.
The CM10 goes on sale in Japan on February 25th.
