Google’s Boston Dynamics company, the people behind previous terrifying yet amazing robot videos, has today shared a glimpse at what it is calling the “next generation” of its Atlas robot. The new generation of Atlas is designed to operate both indoors and outdoors, the company says, and weighs a solid 180 pounds.
The new version of Atlas comes in at 5 feet 9 inches tall and has sensors in its legs and body to help it balance, as well as LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, survey surrounding terrain, and aide in seamless navigation.
In the video below you can see all of those features put to work in the latest generation of Atlas. Despite all of the new technology inside, however, Atlas is still subject to abuse from humans. The video shows humans knocking things out of the robots hands and even totally pushing it over.
In the past, Boston Dynamics has shared videos of its Atlas robot doing things such as scenes from popular film The Karate Kid, as well as acting like a dog. Last December, the company shared a somewhat terrifying video of a trio of robotic dogs pulling a sleigh and wishing us “happy holidays.”
Google’s Boston Dynamics unit has picked up a lot of steam recently. View the company’s latest generation of Atlas below and let us know what you think of it in the comments.
