Yesterday, a report suggested we might see noticeably different performance from the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) between the Exynos and Snapdragon-equipped Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge models. Now it seems we might see a slight difference in camera performance too. A thread on XDA Developers shows that some S7/S7 Edge models ship with a Sony-made sensor, while others use Samsung’s own camera sensors.
It’s worth noting that both cameras boast exactly the same resolution, features and video recording capabilities, and there’s no evidence (yet) to suggest that either sensor is better than the other. Of course, there are a number of users assuming that unless they have a Sony sensor, that they’re being hard-done by. But with the strides made on the optics front by Samsung over the past 12 months, I’m hesitant to go along with that assumption, until we see side-by-side shots clearly indicating a performance gap.
What’s interesting here is that there doesn’t seem to be a clear pattern as to which version of the phone has which sensor. Many Exynos-powered models have the Samsung sensors inside, but some have been found to be using Sony sensors.
Last year with the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge models, buyers faced the exact same situation. Some were equipped with the Samsung ISOSELL sensors, others had Sony’s. Although there were a few minor differences in image quality, there was nothing hugely apparent, and nothing that would be noticed by the general non-techy public consumer.
If you want to check which camera sensor is inside your Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge, you can download the AIDA64 app from the Google Play Store. You’ll need to give the app access to your camera, so that it can detect its makeup, but once you have you’ll find it under the ‘Devices’ section. Feel free to let us know in the comments which sensor you have in your phone, along with your processor type.
