Chrome 51 is rolling out now to Mac, Windows, and soon Linux. The latest version of Google’s browser contains the usual bug and security fixes, but also features a new Credential Management API that improves the website login experience.

The password manager built into Chrome is about to get better with support for the new Credential Management API. Websites will be able to directly interact with the browser’s password manager and federated account services like Google Smart Lock and Facebook. With one tap log in, this feature will be especially useful when signing in on mobile and for sites that have custom login flows.

Nowadays sites are full of embedded videos and social widgets that create processing overhead and slow down the user experience. Starting in version 51, Chrome will no longer run the rendering pipeline for frames that are off screen. This will eliminate unnecessary work for the browser and reduce power consumption by up to 30% .

This update also contains many additional APIs and other changes for developers. Chrome 51 adds a new Material bookmark widget on Android and removes the merge tabs feature. This update includes 42 security fixes contributed by external researches and internal teams.

Chrome 51 for desktop is rolling out now, with updates for Chrome on Android and Chrome OS following shortly.
