It’s been essentially confirmed in the past, but today the Unicode Consortium officially unveiled the 72 new emoji that will be made available in Unicode 9. The latest batch of emoji include a variety of new foods, faces, objects, and sports. Unicode 9 is set to be released on June 21st, which means we may see these new emoji in Android N when it’s released to the public.

There are 22 new “Smileys and People” emoji, including a rolling on the floor laughing face, a nauseated face, a clown face, a pregnant woman, a man dancing, and a face palm. There’s also a new black heart emoji. Most importantly, however, there’s now a selfie emoji.
In the “Animals” category, Unicode 9 adds new gorilla, fox face, deer, bat, rhinoceros, eagle, duck, owl, lizard, shark, shrimp, squid, and butterfly emoji, while the “Nature” category gains a new “wilted flower.”
Unicode 9 adds 18 new “Food and Drink” emoji, as well. Arguably the most popular one here will be the bacon emoji, but there will also be cucumber, pancake, egg, peanut, and croissant emoji, and many more. Meanwhile, the Drink category adds a tumbler glass with whiskey inside.
The “Activities” category gains a series of first, second, and third pace medals, as well as a boxing glove, martial arts uniform, person doing a cartwheel, wrestler, water polo, handball, fencer, goal net, and juggling.
Finally, “Objects” gains a shopping cart and drum with drumsticks emoji.
On the Unicode website, the emoji are depicted in a handful of different styles, as each platform that incorporates emoji generally has a slightly different look. Emojipedia, however, has put together the iOS style of all the new emoji, which can be seen above.
It’s important to keep in mind that these emoji won’t magically hit your device on June 21st when Unicode 9 is made available. Instead, it’s up to Google to decide when to release them.
