After reports came out last week suggesting major layoffs had happened at Cyanogen Inc, the company’s CEO has come out to clear up a bit of the confusion as to what the future holds for the company. In those original reports it was revealed that the company was laying off a large portions of its staff and allegedly pivoting the company’s focus towards applications. As it turns out, that’s not true…
On his Twitter account, Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster confirmed the news that staff had been cut stating that he was “really sad” to let them go, blaming the layoffs on the brutal nature of startups and disruption.
Later on McMaster also confirmed that the company would not be pivoting to apps and that it is still an OS company. He also stated that Cyanogen Inc is still dedicated to its mission of creating “an open Android” as an option for OEMs. Multiple reports originally claimed that Cyanogen would be making a pivot, so it’s easy to think that the CEO’s comments here may be damage control in hiding a future pivot to be announced at a later date.
We’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.
