Alcatel TRU launches at MetroPCS w/ decent specifications and $29 price tag

Affordable smartphone are everywhere now, but some of the least expensive are pretty bad, to say the least. Those devices tend to bring poor specifications to the table, but Alcatel is looking to offer something a little different with its latest budget device, the Alcatel TRU.

This new device, an exclusive to MetroPCS, sells for just $29 and brings a pretty decent spec list for that price. You’ll get a 5-inch, 854×480 display, Android Lollipop, a 5MP rear camera, and a 2MP front camera.

Under the hood, you’ll also find a Snapdragon 210 processor, a single GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with a microSD card slot, and a 2,000 mAh battery with microUSB for charging. The design is also pretty basic but looks good overall.

“Delivering a great smartphone value to all our customers is at the heart of everything we do at Alcatel, and with the launch of TRU, we’re delivering an exceptional value focused smartphone that meets the balance of features and performance at an ultra-affordable price,” said Steve Cistulli, President and General Manager for Alcatel, North America.

So what’s the catch? Sure this is a cheap smartphone with an underwhelming spec list, but how is it just $29? Well, it actually isn’t. The actual price of the TRU is $109, but after an instant rebate and a mail-in rebate MetroPCS customers can take the price all the way down to just $29.
