Earlier this month Huawei made its latest smartphone, the Huawei Mate 9, official. Prior to that announcement we saw multiple leaks pointing to two different models, the Mate 9 and the Mate 9 Pro. During the announcement we did get two models, but they weren’t quite what we expected. Now Huawei has made the Mate 9 Pro official, at least in China.
So what’s different with the Mate 9 Pro? As opposed to the Mate 9, the Mate 9 Pro brings a smaller 5.5-inch display, but this time it’s a higher resolution Quad HD panel using AMOLED technology instead of LCD. The display is also curved on both edges similar to the Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy Note 7.
Huawei has also moved the fingerprint sensor from the back of the phone to the front, although on-screen navigation is still used. Specs on the Mate 9 Pro line-up closely with the Mate 9, bringing the Kirin 960 processor, dual-camera system on the rear, 4,000 mAh battery, and 4GB of RAM in the base model.
All of this lines up perfectly with the Porsche Design edition of the Mate 9 which was announced along with the standard variant, although this variant is far less expensive. Pricing on the Mate 9 Pro in China starts at 4699 yuan ($685) for the 4GB/64GB model and 5299 yuan ($775) for the 6GB/128GB model. A 6GB/256GB model was not announced, although that is available on the Porsche Design model.
The Huawei Mate 9 Pro goes on sale this week in China along with the standard model. Our review of the Mate 9 is coming up soon as well.
