Lenovo busts Chromebook myths in new video as its ThinkPad 13 goes on sale for $185 [Video]

Chromebooks have come a long way over the past few years, but we still see a ton of misconceptions surrounding the platform from the average consumer. That’s a big hurdle for OEMs trying to market Chromebooks, but now Lenovo is firing back on Chromebook myths in a new ad for its ThinkPad 13 Chromebook.

In the brief ad, Lenovo takes on some of the most common misconceptions people have about Chromebooks, first and foremost the “fact” that Chrome OS is “just a browser.” While the ad doesn’t detail exactly why Chrome OS is more than a browser, it does use the tagline like “it’s the browser you love, plus a Cloud-based OS,” which is entirely true. The cloud makes up the best of Chrome OS, and takes care of one of the other common myths, that Chromebooks don’t have any storage.

Lenovo backs that up with the argument that Chrome OS offers local storage, cloud storage, and if you need it, SD storage.

Then, of course, there’s the myth that Chrome OS doesn’t work offline. Just like other platforms, your capabilities will be limited without a connection, but you’ll still be able to create documents, do basic photo editing, and listen to music as well. Plus, things are only going to get better with Android apps incoming.

Another myth we’ve seen, albeit less often, is that Chromebooks aren’t secure. On the contrary, Chromebooks offer security a lot of other platforms can’t match thanks to regular system updates and strong encryption.

Then Lenovo details some of the reasons why the ThinkPad 13 Chromebook sets itself apart from the crowd, namely with its (optional) i5 processor, 180-degree display, and 13.3 inch touchscreen. While that model will set you back quite a bit, the base Celeron-powered model with 4GB of RAM is currently on sale on Amazon for just $185, nearly $100 off the retail price.
