Google’s Pixel is one of the best devices available today, but it doesn’t offer all that much on the hardware front, rather focusing on the software. It lacks a certain flair that many other devices offer, but you can easily make up for that with a skin. Many have gravitated to dBrand for skins, but there’s another option now available, skins from Colorware, and lately, I’ve been testing one out.
Colorware offers skins for both the standard, 5-inch Pixel, as well as the larger Pixel XL. You’ll be able to skin the front, back, glass, and logo on the Pixel with a variety of different options including stone, carbon fiber, metal, wood, leather, and over two dozen solid colors in either a glossy or matte finish.
The customization tool Colorware offers is pretty extensive, providing live previews of what the skin will look like on the front, side, and back. The combinations are endless. For mine, I opted for a blue color scheme, and I think it came out fantastic.
The main rear color on the phone is ‘Cobalt,’ with the front, accent, and logo all using the ‘Abyss’ color, all with a glossy finish. The live preview that Colorware offers is an excellent representation of the final product, with the colors matching up quite nicely.
All of the cutouts on the skin are very accurate, especially around the ports and speakers which are all nearly perfect. Installation is pretty easy as well thanks to the instruction video Colorware has produced for the Pixel/Pixel XL skins, which you can watch below.
Over the past few days using the skin, I’ve been pretty satisfied. The glossy finish lends itself to an interesting feel in the hand, which I quite like. Sadly, though, that finish is also prone to scratches. In just a few days, there are quite a few hairline scratches all over the skin, but are only noticeable in certain lighting conditions.
Overall, Colorware’s skins for the Pixel and Pixel XL are an excellent option, but the pricing may deter some. At $45 for a fully loaded skin, it’s not cheap by any means. However, if you’re looking for more options than the what the competitors offer, Colorware is a fantastic choice.
