PSA: It’s now easier to make a Google Doc from a template via Google Drive

You’ve long been able to quickly create a Google Doc from within Google Drive, but if your intention was to create a Google Doc from one of Google’s many readily-available templates, that required a few more annoying clicks. Now, Google is adding a button to Google Drive that lets you hope right on over to the template selection page to save you some time…

It’s still rolling out (so you might not be able to see it yet), but you can find the new button in Google Drive by tapping the big “New” button, hovering down to the Google Docs option, and then clicking “From a template”. We’re not seeing it quite yet, but it’s definitely going to be a nifty option to have for those who constantly make docs based on Google’s templates.

Today, we’re making it easier for users to create files from templates by granting access to templates directly from Drive. Instead of navigating to the Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms home pages, you can simply go to Drive > New > Google Docs/Sheets/Slides/Forms > From a template. From there, you’ll be directed to the applicable template gallery, where you can select the template of your choice.
