Google Home adds shopping via Google Express, shipping/membership fees waived until April

Similar to the Amazon Echo, Google Home now has the ability to shop, order, and purchase with just your voice. The feature began rolling out last night and allows users to order home essentials through Google Express and its over 50 partner retailers.

Commands like “Ok Google, order paper towels” will have Home list off matching products and their prices. Saying “yes” will place the order with Assistant providing a confirmation. “No” will list more suggestions and saying it twice results in that item being added to your shopping list for future purchase.

To set up, users can access Payments from Assistant settings in the Google app or through the Google Home app by navigating to ‘More settings.’ Either method will walk users through entering default credit card information and shipping address.

The biggest caveat is being required to use Google Express. The company’s home delivery network covers nearly 90% of the US as of last year and includes many local retailers. Popular stores include Costco, Whole Foods Market, Walgreens, PetSmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond. A full list is available below.

As a special promotion, Google Express is waiving additional service or membership fees, including shipping. The offer lasts through April 30, 2017 and only applies to purchases made through Home.
