There has been a very public dispute happening between Google and Amazon for some time now. In it, we have seen Amazon stop selling many Google products, and we have witnessed YouTube get removed from several of the online shopping giant’s streaming devices.
Thankfully, especially for consumers, it appears as though the two companies are starting to work together, which might have now lead to Amazon releasing a Prime Video app for Android TV…
Prime Video has had a very rocky existence on Android. For a long time, users had to manually sideload a Prime Video APK if they wished to watch the service’s content on their mobile devices. This was necessary because the Play Store has a policy that prevents apps from acting as their own app store. Then, back in August, Amazon updated the Prime Video app and made it available to everyone on the Play Store. Unfortunately, it didn’t and still doesn’t include Chromecast support.
As far as Android TV is concerned, Prime Video was surprisingly included in the Nvidia Shield TV, announced at CES 2017 back in January. The service was tied to the Shield TV’s firmware so it never showed up on the Play Store and couldn’t be sideloaded to other Android TV devices.
Unfortunately, as tested by Android Police, it doesn’t appear as though any Android TV devices are compatible with the Prime Video application. This is probably due to Amazon not yet updating the compatibility list, which means the company might not have been entirely prepared to launch the Android TV app just yet.
