Google I/O 2024 isn’t over, but the keynote has come and gone. That keynote hasn’t been met with much excitement and, somehow, the official 10-minute recap of Google I/O 2024’s keynote feels just as slow and repetitive as the full thing.
The clear focus of I/O this year is AI, as the technology and how it integrates with Google products took up the entire 2-hours runtime of the keynote. That included some exciting bits, like the reveal of Project Astra, but the handful of exciting reveals were undercut by spending a whole lot of time on the technical aspects of AI.

Not defending Google here or anything but I think we might have the wrong expectation when it comes to these dev conferences.
To me their main goal is not to announce new products ready to use today. Rather I think they set the stage for what the company is working and how they are advancing computing and their platforms.
I rewatched the last 2 years I/O and I don't really see any difference in how they are talking about how they are advancing their platforms (chrome, android, cloud, etc..).
I think the same goes for Android. The beta program is announced early in the year and it takes 9 months or so to be complete.
WWDC usually does the same thing. Apple uses it to showcase how they are advancing their platforms. I think the only difference is that Apple is just better at presenting where they focus on what they have been doing and less about where things are going... To me it's a choice but I don't really see Google's presentation as bad. They are some stuff about what they have been working on and some stuff that are more aspirational.. Nothing wrong with that... at least that's my opinion
Google has since posted an official 10-minute recap of its I/O keynote to YouTube and it feels tedious and repetitive, much like the full event. The few exciting announcements, like AI Overviews in Search, Project Astra, and more, make up mere moments of the video despite being some of the biggest announcements. Android, a subject that’s been a key part of I/O for years, is completely left out of the recap – not that it was given much attention in the full event.
