Chromebook Plus getting Recorder app, Help me read, and more

In addition to the Quick Insert menu, the latest set of Chromebook Plus features, including a new Recorder app, are rolling out over the coming weeks.

Help me read is accessed with a right click in websites and PDFs. This brings up a floating window with a “Summarize” shortcut and “Ask a question” field that’s handy for follow-up questions. An update next year lets you highlight specific sentences/paragraphs if “you need extra help clarifying.”

Chromebook Plus is getting a Recorder app that captures audio with real-time transcripts and speaker labels, as well as summaries using Gemini Nano. This works on-device with a dual-column UI that is pretty reminiscent of the Pixel experience.

Live Translate works in local and online videos, as well as meetings, to convert what’s on your screen. Over 100 languages are supported.

Speaking of video calls, Chromebook Plus has a new “Studio-style mic” feature that makes you “sound crystal clear” and reduces noise and room reverberation with an “AI-based high-quality mic simulation.” “Appearance effects” work to “adjust lighting, brightness, and more to help you look your best.”

These AI-powered features are coming to Chromebook Plus devices throughout October (ChromeOS 129 and 130).

A “Welcome Recap” upon unlock asks if you want to “open your previous windows and apps.” You also get a row of suggestions for the weather, upcoming calendar appointments, file suggestions, and pages from your phone/other devices. These cards can also be accessed from the Overview mode.

In Quick Settings (bottom-right corner), you’ll find a new “Focus” Tile that turns on Do Not Disturb for a set period. It shows Google Tasks to let you select a list item, while you can play Focus sounds or a calming YouTube Music playlist.

The Gemini PWA shortcut will now appear on all ChromeOS devices, while new Chromebook purchases now come with three months of Google One AI Premium. Chromebook Plus still comes with a full year.
