ChromeOS 130 will introduce a new audio Recorder later this month. While some AI features are exclusive to Plus devices, all Chromebooks will have access to the Recorder app.
The underlying recording and transcription capabilities will be available to all Chromebooks. Speech-to-text works offline and in real-time after downloading an approximately 100MB model.
There’s a nice dual-column layout that takes after the Pixel Recorder app and is fully resizable with a full Material You design. On Chromebooks, there’s the ability to record device audio.
You can search through transcripts and adjust playback speed, while there’s the ability to export audio and text outside of the Recorder app.
Meanwhile, if you’re on a Chromebook Plus device, you can get an AI summary of the recording based on the transcript. This is a 2GB model download and generates a three-point summary. You’ll also get a title suggestion.
The Recorder app is coming with ChromeOS 130, which will start rolling out at the end of October. That update for Chromebook Plus also adds Help me read and new video calling features like a studio-style mic and appearance effects (lighting, brightness, and more).
